Memories Around the Table
Cups of tea and conversations with my Grandparents stand as some of my most cherished memories. We would gather around the kitchen table, sharing stories, laughter, and Grandmas homemade biscuits. A place of learning, love and togetherness. These moments were precious and have become even more so especially now that my Grandparents are no longer with us. The simple act of making a cuppa always brings their presence close.
The Comfort of Ritual
Within my family having a cuppa has always been a way that we take time to slow down and connect around the table. When I began writing it became a way to unravel my thoughts and piece things back together. By default, I always paired this with tea. The family ritual of slowing down and contemplation. Sometimes, I drink more tea than write; other times, it is the opposite. This ritual, whether focused on the cup or the page, always offers comfort and a way to connect with myself—mind, body, and soul. While also honoring the love of my family.
Mindfulness Through Tea
Tea helps us achieve calm and mindfulness by encouraging us to slow down and pay attention. It teaches patience, awareness and an ability to notice what we generally do not in our ever so busy lives. The practice of steeping the tea in a way is a metaphor for allowing thought, mindfulness and richness of this to brew and bring forth the essence we hold within us.
As I like to say, “Tea is the pause that refreshes the soul.”
Connection in Stillness
At first glance, the act of sitting quietly with a cup of tea may seem mundane, but within this pause lies connection. I felt closely tied to my Grandparents in these moments as if they were there guiding me, encouraging me to write and have those internal conversations with myself. To journal through this.
The Invitation to Be
There is, in truth, no task—only an invitation to be. We are not striving to think or to force away thought; instead, we open to the gentle unfolding of our consciousness, honoring whatever arises and letting those thoughts flow onto paper.
Beautiful Teas & A Journal
This is for you to explore. There are many beautiful herbal teas available. Seek what resonates with you, make it part of your ritual, using your senses and intuition. I would recommend certified organic tea and check for unbleached tea bags or choose loose leaf tea. You can even brew your own. Lemongrass and ginger is a favorite of mine made fresh. Investing in a beautiful teacup and tea pot is also a lovely way to extend the ritual and deepen the practice for your spirit and soul nurturing. Along with this seek a journal that calls to you, is beautiful and is waiting for your perfect, precious words.
Exploring Tea Varieties
Green tea, rich in antioxidants, offers a gentle energy boost and supports mental clarity. Black tea, with its robust flavor, is perfect for grounding moments. Herbal teas like chamomile and lavender soothe the mind and body, ideal for evening rituals. Each tea variety brings unique benefits and flavors, inviting you to discover what aligns with your mood and needs.
Mindfulness Practices to Pair with Tea
Try a simple breathing exercise while your tea steeps: inhale deeply for four counts, hold for four, and exhale for six. As you sip, focus on the warmth of the cup, the aroma, and the taste, fully immersing yourself in the present moment.
Soulful Meditation
Begin by finding a quiet space. Sit comfortably and close your eyes.
Take a deep breath in, feeling the air fill your lungs and your body settle. As you exhale, let go of any tension.
Bring your attention to your heart—the center of your being. Imagine it glowing with a gentle, vibrant light.
With each breath, feel this light grow warmer and brighter, filling you with a sense of peace and wholeness.
Reflect on your journey: the skills you’ve learned, the boundaries you’ve built, and the mysteries yet to be discovered.
Honor every piece of your puzzle, knowing that each one is essential to your story.
If you feel restless or uncertain, acknowledge it with kindness.
Remind yourself: “I am a work in progress, and every step I take is meaningful.”
Stay here for a few moments, breathing in self-compassion and breathing out gratitude.
When you’re ready, gently open your eyes, carrying this soulful awareness into your day.
